Undergraduate Program

Welcome to the Undergraduate Program in Sociology. We offer four-year Honours and three-year Pass BA Degrees in Sociology. Students may register as full-time or part-time. Our programs are very popular with students (the second largest in the Faculty of Social Sciences). So please contact the department early if you are interested.

We offer a wide variety of courses in such areas as culture, deviance, education, family, gender, ethnic and race relations, health and health care, media, methods, occupations, organizations, theory, sexualities, social inequality, sport, technologies, and work. We emphasize experiential learning, inquiry-based learning, and problem-based learning in many of our courses.

Students have a chance to work on a one-on-one relation with their professors in research and reading courses. You are given a fair degree of autonomy in choosing your own research topics, and collaborating with other students.

Students who graduate with a BA in sociology are employable in many professional and managerial fields, as well as being well prepared to go on to graduate school in many different areas of study. A number of undergraduate students are hired as research assistants to help out on faculty research projects, or as teaching assistants in first-year sociology.

Please take the time to introduce yourself to your instructor, or visit the Department of Sociology on the sixth floor of Kenneth Taylor Hall. There is also an Active Sociology Student Society which you can join. They have an office on the sixth floor of Kenneth Taylor Hall.
