Convocation 2012 image

What is convocation?

In academia, “convocation” is a ceremonial assembly of the members of a college or university. Traditionally, it highlights accomplishments of the previous year and serves as an annual or biannual opportunity for the university community to hear from its leadership.

Every two years the faculty, staff, students and administration from across the Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) gather in College Station to participate in a formal academic convocation. Unlike more traditional convocations, community members and stakeholders from throughout the state with a vested interest in the success of the TAMHSC are also invited to participate.

When and where is convocation?

Convocation 2012 will be in College Station at Rudder Auditorium on the Texas A&M University Campus on Jan. 20, 2012, from 2-3:30 p.m.

How should I get to Rudder Auditorium if I am in College Station?

Bus transportation has been arranged from the State Highway 47 Campus, Reynolds and the SRPH complex. Bus transportation information will be updated as soon as possible.

What if I cannot travel to College Station and still want to participate?

Convocation will be broadcast to campuses and locations throughout Texas to allow more individuals to attend. Below is a list of cities for the videoconference. Rooms will be updated as soon as information is available.

Faculty and Student Luncheon Attendees:

You must have a ticket to attend either of the luncheons. Tickets will be distributed by your dean’s office prior to Jan. 20. Please be prepared to give your ticket at the door before entering the luncheon. Student luncheon presentation will be available through live streaming video in the remote locations.

Who is expected to attend?

This is an official gathering of Texas A&M Health Science Center, and thus faculty, students, staff and administrators are expected to attend. Transportation will be coordinated through the dean’s (or director’s) office for individuals traveling from Dallas, Kingsville, Corpus Christi and McAllen. Individuals traveling from Austin, Houston, Round Rock or Temple are encouraged to carpool.

Are classes canceled? Offices closed?

Given this is an official Texas A&M Health Science Center academic event, the expectation is that faculty and students will attend the convocation and other related events in lieu of attending class during the designated times (between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.). Likewise, all offices are expected to either close or be staffed by a skeleton crew (e.g., in order to answer telephones in college main offices).

What is everyone expected to wear?

All faculty will be in full academic regalia (to be coordinated through deans’ offices). Students who will also participate in the opening processional are asked to wear professional attire; those with white coats are asked to wear such.
