The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) was established in 1999 after receiving original approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents in September 1997. Created to consolidate major health-related elements within the Texas A&M University System, the TAMHSC serves the people of Texas through a statewide and multidisciplinary approach to community health. Original units in the consolidation included the Texas A&M University College of Medicine, Baylor College of Dentistry, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology, and the then-proposed School of Rural Public Health and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (now School of Graduate Studies).

Since then, the Texas A&M Health Science Center has continued to evolve and grow. It received full 10-year accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 2003, and is up for accreditation again in 2012.

1999

• Texas A&M Health Science Center established
• Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC) established to provide community-based educational opportunities, including the popular diabetes education program.

2003

• HSC receives full accreditation
• Rural and Community Health Institute (RCHI) formed

2004

• South Texas Center (now called McAllen Campus) opens to join and complement School of Rural Public Health's existing programs.

2006

• Located on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville campus, the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy joins HSC.

2008

• College of Nursing opens doors, offering the B.S.N. and RN-to-B.S.N.
• Large expansion leads to groundbreaking of new campuses in Bryan and Round Rock, both of which boast the state-of-the-art simulation center

2009

• National Center for Emergency Medical Preparedness and Response (NCEMPR) established to provide training and technical support for the health sector in disaster response and recovery.
